Jocelyn Saddler Presents:

Watchmen was the book on the shelf that I looked at and thought to myself that I should read it, but didn’t. Then I hear that the movie is coming out so I made sure to read it. I always try to read the book before I see the movie. Yes, the book is always better because the movie never tells the whole story. I appreciate the story of the book more than the entertainment of the movie.

Anyway, I read Watchmen in preparation for the movie, plus it is something that I’ve always wanted to read- just kept spending my money on other things. First thing I thought of was how can a movie be made out of this? On face value there is a lot going on in the book, therefore a lot of information to take in. It is a very complex novel to read. Maybe more so because it is a graphic novel, so not only is there a lot to read, but also a lot to look at.

So I’m reading and really liking what I am reading. Before I started reading, I thought that the characters involved were classic superheroes with powers and such. They are instead flawed human vigilantes, except for one. Plus, it was something of a murder mystery and I love those. I got to the end and realized what the master plan was and decided that I didn’t like the story. I called my friend and said I did not like it. He thought I was crazy. After sleeping on it I woke up realizing that it was very good and starting to think about the philosophical meaning behind the book. Then when I slept on it again and started talking about it, it became incredible. Amazing, in that this was a story written 25 years ago and still has relevance to what is happening in our world today. It is very prescient. Yeah I learned a new word.

Vague synopsis I know, but I didn’t want to give too much away. The movie is coming out and I believe that the book should be read.

I’ve read Watchmen and there are a lot of people who have not read it. I know because the movie is creating a lot of buzz and I keep getting asked what it is about. Do I think it will be a good movie? Well the adventure to the end will more than likely be good. Will the movie be good for those that have read the book and loved it? More than likely: no. Why? Well have you’ve seen the Wizard Oz. It’s a classic movie and full of great music. Do you know what the book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is in theory supposed to be about?
