Elliott Serrano Presents:

Y’know, after my last column on Marvel Divas I’ve had a change of heart. I now think that Joe Quesada was on to something when he approved Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa’s pitch of ‘Sex in the City’ in the Marvel Universe. Casting several of the Marvel U’s female heroines in a saucy, sudsy soap-opera is an – ahem – stroke …of genius! And since I think that the title is going to be a qualified hit, a top ten seller for sure, I’m sending this pitch to Mr. Quesada in anticipation of the demand for Marvel Diva spin-offs and derivatives – cuz y’know that Marvel loves to run a winning formula into the ground!

THE TITLE: MIGHTY MEN OF MARVEL

THE PITCH: Its RESCUE ME meets BIG BROTHER meets BAYWATCH in the MARVEL UNIVERSE!

THE CONCEPT: Fantastic Four Member Johnny Storm (AKA The Human Torch) builds an all-exclusive retreat for male heroes. Knowing all to well the pressures these mighty men of Marvel face each day, Johnny wants to give them a place where the guys can get together and relax, refresh and get to know each other in a stress-free environment. Each month, a featured hero comes to Johnny’s resort - the StormBreak Resort, hidden away in a pocket universe - and reveals a side of themselves that Marvel readers have never seen before!

THE STORIES:

REBIRTH OF THE AMERICAN DREAM – A newly resurrected Steve Rogers returns to a world that has changed beyond his worse imaginings. The “Dark Reign” that has the Marvel Villains in positions of authority has caused Rogers to question his idealism. Has everything he’s sacrificed been in vain? Is the world he’s come back to worth fighting for? These are all questions he asks himself while getting deep tissue massages and drinking scotch & soda on the white sand beaches of the StormBreak Resort.

JUNGLE FEVER, JUNGLE RHYTHM –T’Challa, the one-time ruler of the African Nation of Wakanda has been deposed. Now in exile, he searches for a new purpose in life and decides to take some time to meditate and collect his thoughts. Accepting an invitation from his one-time teammate, the Black Panther goes to the StormBreak Resort and reflects on his life and his loves. This story also introduces us to the “Watcher’s Room”, a secret chamber where our heroes can open up and reveal their deepest, darkest secrets to Uatu, The Watcher, without fear of being judged. ‘Cuz, y’know, the guy just watches.

WHEN YOU WISH UPON A NORTHSTAR – This is where we meet the ‘straw that stirs the drink’ at the StromBreak in the form of Jean-Paul Beaubier, AKA North Star. Jean-Paul’s role as leisure activities coordinator allows him to spend time with each hero as they go on many exciting and stimulating adventures in the resort’s pocket universe. As the Marvel U’s premiere, openly gay superhero, he’ll help the heroes that come to him explore their sensitive sides, and open up in ways they never could imagine!

Like when Peter Parker finally realizes that he lost the ‘love of his life’ (Mary Jane - hmph) in a deal with the ‘devil’ (Mephisto - looking just dashing in that red body suit) and takes his broken heart to the StormBreak Resort to get it mended. He has to confront some harsh realities when Northstar asks him: What do you do when the very fabric of reality has been changed around you? How do you react when you discover that forces beyond your control have taken away the one thing you have loved the most? Are you going to succumb to the pain? Are you going to give in to despair? And in trying to recover, are you going to close yourself off to new experiences?

Well…are you Pete?

So there you have it, the Mighty Men of Marvel, showing what makes them strong…what makes them MEN. For all of us, their fans, to see.

It’s got ‘hit’ written all over it, doesn’t it? In fact, I think that the male readers of MIGHTY MEN OF MARVEL are going to enjoy it just as much as female readers are going to enjoy MARVEL DIVAS!

Elliott Serrano is a comic book writer/columnist/graphic designer who is not gay. Really. Yeah, he saw RENT and enjoyed it, and he really loves spinach dip in sourdough bread bowls, but he is NOT gay... not that there's anything wrong with that. Check out his YOUTUBE CHANNEL and see how not gay he is. You can even read his BLOG to see just how much of a manly man he is too!
