Follically Challenged Productions Presents:

So, here we are: CWR’s big San Diego Spectacular edition. I’m sure my esteemed colleagues will turn in columns designed to illuminate, educate and titillate you in regards to the San Diego Experience, as well they should! There’s no event quite like it anywhere else in the world.

For my part, I’m going to keep it brief; there’s really nothing that can be put down on this page that won’t be covered elsewhere, but I love this time of year so much that I feel compelled to make my case anyway. Consider this a commercial, as opposed to a full-on documentary.

From a sheer entertainment standpoint, SDCC offers the widest range of fun for fans of comics, toys, TV, movies, video games and girls in skimpy outfits. It’s still appropriate for the family, mind you, but there’s definitely plenty for the grown-ups as well.

For the comics professional or amateur, though, this is the Big Dance. You’ll never find as many opportunities under one roof, nor as many party-ready professional geeks assembled in one geographical situation. You have to be brave, though, and take this beast by the horns; there’s a fine line between “outgoing” and “obnoxious” – but there’s definitely a carpe diem element to the whole thing. You never know who you’ll end up talking to, drinking with or standing at a urinal next to. Be respectful…but be ready.

The most important thing, I think – and this is for everyone, now - is to just do the damn thing. This is my fourth year in a row, and I literally can’t conceive of ever missing it. It’s a class reunion, writing seminar, toy haul, wild booze-a-palooza, talent competition, celebrity cameo tour and mingling opportunity all rolled into one awesome spectacle. In other words, a little piece of Heaven on Earth for a hard-working geek like me.
